The Neapolitan mastiff is an Italian breed of mastiff from the region of Naples. There are many theories about the development, creation, and/or recreation of the neo. What is known… is the breed was basically extinct, and was rebuilt by a group of dedicated Italians…in particular, Piere Scanziani is given credit for the development of our modern day neo. There are statues of mastini-type dogs from ancient Rome not so unlike the dogs found today…heavy of bone, broad chested, fierce in appearance.

Today, the neo, the mastini, is a powerful, large-boned dog with a protective, watchful, but not unfriendly temperament.

Ask about potential health issues in this breed. Particularly, if you are considering a particular breeder, ask about issues in the progeny of his/her dogs! Ask about the longevity of their dogs.
